How To Raise Rabbits As A Beginner

Rabbit farming is not the most exploited trade in most countries especially in rural areas because they have been viewed as wild animals that can be hunted for meat and hide only.

As time went by, people are gradually taking an interest in keeping rabbits for meat. Their meat is lean, healthy and their hide is used for traditional regalia in some countries especially in Africa.

These furry creatures are so adorable to watch as they can be petted and very cunning when not careful. The speed rabbits exude is incomprehensible. It requires skill to catch a wild rabbit.

The hide or fur comes in different colours such as grey, black, brown, white and mixed colours depend on the breed or strain. A beginner in rabbit farming can research, undergo training or get knowledge through other rabbit farmers.

Rabbit Management


These small furry creatures require proper housing when planning to domesticate them. They may have it in their DNA to live in burrows (holes), so a beginner farmer should keep them in a cage made from prefabricated
 Rabbitproduction is easy because they do not require a lot of space; however, their housing size is determined by the number of rabbits you may want to start out with.

Proper ventilation is a must to ensure you get healthy rabbits.

 Raising rabbits can be fun for children too but supervision is important. You do not want children handling rabbits in an unfriendly manner which will make them aggressive.

It will also encourage your children to venture into farming when you expose them to such practices. Teach your children the handling techniques because you do not want to injure the rabbits during handling.

 Proper sanitation is important too to attain healthy rabbits. Your rabbit housing should be well ventilated so that the place cannot hold mould which can make your rabbits infected by diseases unnoticed. Ensure daily inspection and examine the eyes, nose, ears, anus and the skin under fur to make sure they have no diseases.

 The important things to note as a beginner farmer are as follows;
The doe shows signs of being ready for mating by restlessness and nervousness by rubbing her chin on feeding and watering equipment, and by attempting to join other rabbits in nearby hutches.

Always master the process of the cycle and it is important to keep records of your rabbits just to have an idea of how to ensure there are no deaths in every litter produced.


Never keep a rabbit in a wood cage or earthly ground; it can escape by either digging a hole or shaving the wood gradually until there is a hole to escape. Rabbits can be housed from a simple wire cage to outside hutches and large scale building.

Your rabbits should be protected from rain, wind and direct sunlight. Consider the material to use when constructing your rabbitry and available resources too.
Cage or hutches – as a rabbit house, make sure that their housing provides the following;

 Adequate ventilation
 House is easy to clean and maintain
 Is economical and of good quality
 It is durable and sturdy


Rabbits Bread Ideal For Beginners

It is wise to start with a breed that has a friendly reputable nature which is considered to be gentle. All domestic rabbits can be petted, so let’s view some of the breeds;

 Blanc De Bous cat – enjoys playing and cuddling with lively and affectionate traits.
 Polish–they can withstand low temperatures but do not expose them to draft. Just like all rabbits, proper care is important to deter health problems.

 Dutch–beautiful colour pattern and are dwarf by nature. The Dutch are great for meat.
 Rex– medium sized built with round body good for commercial purpose.


Other breeds to consider are; Mini Rex, Mini Lop, Holland Lop, Meissner Lop, English Lop and Lionhead to name just a few. These are considered to be friendly and even children can raise them too under supervision.
